Subject:RE: Electro vs. CX-3
Hi Ed,
I bought an Electro73 specifically for open jamming at the local blues club
where being able to set up and tear down in a few minutes is crucial. The
keybd, X-stand, and Barbetta can be carried from the car in a single trip!
Anyway, while the tone is beautiful, I find the on-board leslie sim very
frustrating. There are no settings other than fast, slow, and brake. For
my taste, the spin up/down times are too fast and I find myself switching
back and forth more frequently just to keep some motion happening. My full
ensemble rig includes a Voce V3 with drawbars so I'm coming from tweaker
heaven dialing in every possible leslie parameter. Actually, I just
adjusted the stock 122 for slightly slower ramp up/down to extenuate the
transitions we all love.
I've compared my V3 and Electro basic voices A-B style, and they are
extremely close, Electro being a bit "clearer" or more "crystaline."
Alternatively, you could say the V3 has more balls and bite. Ever so
slightly. The lack of leslie adjustments is very annoying to me, but I
compromise on this to get the convenient carry. You situation is similar in
that the CX-3 is also very tweakable and I think you would miss this
flexibility. I'm always glad to get back to my "real" rig after a night
with the Electro and wouldn't even consider it for a recording project.

Subject: [CWSG] Electro vs. CX-3
Hello fellow cloners,
I haven't been lucky enough to play through a Nord Electro yet, mainly
because there aren't any anywhere near me, but there seem to be enough
devotees on this list that I feel I should look into it. I'm currently
using a non-vintage KORG CX-3 through a Speakeasy for my clone, but I'm
seriously trying to pair down my live rig into one keyboard and it occurred
to me that I might be able to do that with an Electro Rack unit. For those
of you who have played both the CX-3 and the Electro I'd like to solicit
your opinions of how they compare, strictly sonic-wise. I'm aware of all
the differences in physical layout - I'm mainly interested in the difference
in sound, especially the Leslie sim in the Electro. I personally think the
Leslie sim in the CX-3 kicks ass and I sure wish KORG would get on the stick
with a stand-alone Leslie sim based on the CX-3 technology - hint, hint,
nudge, nudge Jerry! Now that I think of it, a rack CX-3 wouldn't be a bad
idea either; Clavia seemed to be able to do it (and hey, if my mentioning a
CX-3 Rack turns into another thread, which I most welcome, please follow
list protocol and change the Subject line [you're welcome, Bruce]).
Anywho, I like to set my virtual Leslie where the virtual mics are very
close to the virtual horn to get an almost exaggerated effect; while this
may not be the best setting for recording, I find this setting cut's through
a live mix better when I'm competing with the rest of the noisy musicians
onstage. Does the Electro's Leslie sim have the same flexibility as the
CX-3's to allow me to do this?
Any and all opinions are appreciated and thanks.
