Actually, he said that "the Grunge" comes from his
external effects. His direct out from the organ preamp
goes into his rack. He has a swell pedal on the floor
that is hooked into this that adds compression &
distortion. As Eric mentioned, this direct signal is
mixed in with the mic'ed signal at the board to great
effect. Sweet sounding rig!
I noticed that while he plays he tends to keep his
swell pedal at less than half volume most of the time.
Even during most leads the pedal wasn't over half way
up. Obviously most of his volume came from the
monitors & mains & it seemed to give him much better
tone control than if he had to max it out to be heard.
If it weren't my daughter's birthday today I'd go hear
them in PA, but 7 year olds don't understand things
like that. At least I caught last night. 8^)
