Subject:Re: MIDI Drawbar Controller for B4

Hi Steve,

I didn't order any matrix encoding hardware, as I'm building that
functionality into my manuals. This involves removing the 2/3 mile
of wire, and placing a diodes in each of the little slots cut in the
circuit board. One end of the diode gets wired to the back of the
key contact, and the other end gets wired to the nearest matrix
point. The nice thing about this is it's cheap (although I don't
know how much matrix encoders go fo). The diodes are a few cents
each, which is fortunate, since we need a ton of them! This way I
can just run a parallel port connector (DB-25 pin) to each manual for
the complete matrix/preset encoding.

Right now I use my desktop for B4, and I haven't decided what I'm
going to buy for the dedicated machine. I have seen some
ridiculously small motherboards at computer shows lately, so if I can
find one with onboard graphics and a pci slot, I should be in
business. I'm also toying with the idea of just putting external
ports on the thing and running a laptop, but it may be cheaper to
just throw a motherboard inside and get a cheap flatscreen. (you can
get 15 inch ones for close to $200 these days)

I've picked up the right type of pin connectors for use with Jordan's
B4CE board. If you'd like, I can post the Jameco part numbers for
these since you'll probably be needing them soon!

I can take some photos and send them your way if interested.
Probably the most interesting thing at this point is the voltage
divider I connected to the end of my drawbar wires. I also found a 6
position rotary switch to replace my vibrato assembly. I was glad to
remove it actually, since every pound counts! It's amazing how light
this model A is without the tonewheels or any of the other
electronics. The manuals are still quite heavy though!

The detachable case/leg pedastal idea is great--it really gives your
project the best of both worlds. Portability and presence.

Anyway, I'll let you know when my B4CE gets here.. I just got an
email from Jordan and he says it should be here any day! Can't wait
to get this monster wired up.

Again, I was really excited to see your pages/post. Looks like a
very clean and well thought out project!

Keep up the good work,

Jude
