Subject:Leslie sim comparisons
Hello,
I have the NI B4 software and a Motion Sound R3-147 rotary speaker.
I did some comparisons of the B4 by itself and with the MS, trying to
get an aggressive rock organ kind of sound, and found out:
B4 plain -> MS preamp/speaker = great
B4 plus Drive -> MS speaker (bypass tube preamp) = great
B4 by itself (Drive/Rotary Speaker)= OK, but a bit harsh and one
dimensional
At some point I'll probably make some MP3s for reference. I'd be
interested in hearing more examples than the ones on the
Korg/Clavia/etc. websites with recordings of the recent clones, if
people happen to be recording their stuff. None of the samples that
use some distortion seemed to be all that impressive (had that
similar harsh quality the B4 has by itself).
I was sursprised to find that the MS tube distortion vs. the B4
distortion were quite comparable, it's just in the actual rotary
speaker that the MS is far superior in the way it adds that grinding,
animated, shimmering quality, while smoothing out the distortion in
the process and adding bite. Even with different EQ settings to more
closely match what I thought the MS was doing, I couldn't get the B4
to sound close.
That's why I was curious how the CX-3 and Electro fare in this
regard, I know people regard those Leslie sims highly (as well as the
B4) but in these particular qualities the digital sim seemed to be
lacking.
