Subject:Re: Do keys have lips? (Do chickens?)

Not being an organist per se (for most of my musical life I considered myself
a bass player) I'm not sure what a "Palm Gliss" is, but I DO know what a gliss
is, and the way I do them, the Roland A70 works real well--better than any keyboard
I have played recently. Much better than my Hammond Model A, which could inflict
serious injury to one's hand or fingers if one is not careful, since the side
edges of the keys are quite sharp in the Model A.

All,

Regarding the lip on the CX-3, vs. the waterfall keys on the BX-3, Electro,
etc.:

I've been using the CX-3 for about 17 months now, which has keys with the short,
rounded lips.  I have no issues with palm glisses, even on songs like "Hush"
and "Fly Like An Eagle," which are very gliss-intensive.  Their shape may be
less optimal than a real waterfall keys, but I don't think it's by very much.
If the keys on the BX-3 are better weighted, have a more even touch, or are
in some way superior to the CX-3 keys, I, too might be interested in updating
to a set someday.  If the only difference is the lack of a lip, however, there's
no compelling reason to change.

Piano-like keys with a thick, dull lip are quite different from synth-like keys
with a "diving board" side profile, which can catch on the edge of the hand
during glisses.  And even synth-like keys may be fine for glissing; it depends
on the smoothness of the edges, the angle of the bottom part, and the flexibility
of the plastic.

I would test the different keyboards that you are considering for a second keyboard,
and not get overly hung up on waterfall shape, or lack of it.

Regards,

-BW
