Subject:Goldy McJohn and his Lowery
In my ongoing quest to get the real skinny on 'who really played what' in
the Hammond/Rock Organ genre, I came across this quote from an interview
with Larry Byrom, the guitarist for Steppenwolf who played on the "Monster",
"Live", and "7" albums.
(Q) You mentioned Goldy McJohn on the organ - what did he do to it to get
that intense, behemoth sound?
(LB) A lot of people think it was a B-3, but it was a Lowery with a B-3
Leslie with a cracked speaker horn. It made for a crackling, break-up sound,
and of course, we had it as loud as it could go. That was his signature
sound.
I have no idea if this is actually true and I'm having trouble corroborating
it. Unfortunately, on his own website Goldy doesn't bring up anything about
his own playing, his gear, or anything else we'd really like to know about;
there's just a lot of pictures, but no pictures of organs. I'm attempting
to make contact with him to find out definitively about his signature sound
directly from the source. However, both Goldy and Jerry Corbetta aren't
talking to me yet. The chase continues.
