Subject:BX3/VK7
I've noticed some conversation here about the bright sound of the new Korg CX3. I've had the chance to play both the VK7 and CX3 together for a couple of months, and I have noticed that the CX3 has a brightness the VK usually doesn't. I think this brightness is the reason that, at first listen, people tend to like the CX3 better. What causes this brightness is that the CX3 always adds a hint of the 2 2/3' and 1' overtones, even when those drawbars are in all the way. You can reproduce that easily on the VK by pulling those drawbars out a notch or two. If you want the CX to get rid of that brightness, you can turn off the 'vintage' sound effect and those harmonics disappear (very few CX3 presets do not use the 'vintage' effect). When you do either of these things, both organs actually sound quite a bit alike. But, the CX is still sharper (like E,L&P) and the VK is fatter (more like Booker T). BTW, the VK 'vintage' effect adds some high noise but no actual pitches. The CX Leslie sounds a bit farther away and the VK is like it was more closely miked. Both are great! Since I slide around on the tops of the keys and not the fronts, the shape of the keys make no difference to me.
