Subject:Re: Ultimate Hammond Sampler

Some of you have mentioned that brand-name organists often conceal
the drawbar settings they use to safeguard their unique sound. My
first reaction was that this seems pointless, since there are only so
many unique sounds you can get from an organ.

Then, I called my wife, who has a masters degree in statistics. With
nine drawbars, each with nine possible settings, she calculates that
there are 387,420,420 possible drawbar setting combinations.

Now, of course, 888888888 isn't a whole lot different than
888888887. But, on the other hand, we're typically dealing with two
keyboards, each of which has 387 million possible settings (not to
mention different variations with chorus, vibrato, leslie,
percussion, miking, tone controls, quirks of aged instruments (or
clones), etc.).

Given that, even if you have an extraordinary ear for subtle tonal
variations, you're probably about as likely to be able to figure out
Keith Emerson's exact favorite settings as you are to run into him at
Burger King tonight.

YMMV, but in my case, I'd say those secrets are quite safe...
