I played a VK-7 for about 2 years and it failed regularly just as you
describe! I never did fix it (sold it instead) but I heard that the problem
is caused by a heat sink on the power transformer shorting out to the
chassis, or something similar.

I found mine to be temperature-dependent. On cold days, it would restart
several times in succession about 40 minutes after I set up, presumably when
it reached a certain temperature. Or perhaps it was when my playing got
really "hot" ... Usually in the middle of a solo. I always got raised
eyebrows off the guitarist when I started banging the top of the organ!

Anyway, I understand the fix involves filing the heat sink down a bit to
stop it touching whatever else it makes contact with. I think this is
something you can do yourself, but I never tried. I did try to get Roland
(Ireland) to fix it, but they were unable to, claiming that it was not a
known problem.

No, this happens when the top of the board is clear. If anything mine seems
to get more stable as it warms up. Right after I power it on cold, all I
have to do is gently tap the top of the case just behind the reverb/volume
control (underneath which is the power transformer and board - I've had a
look) and the display flickers and the unit resets.

Even when it's warmed up and there's nothing resting on the top of the case,
the vibrations of just playing the thing can set it off. (This is, I think
why other users have said it always seems to happen during solos - that's
true in my experience and it's during solos when the keys take a real
pounding and the vibrations are heavier).

As a first step toward identifying the problem as indeed an internal one,
nothing (such as another keyboard or notes, notebooks, music paper etc.)
is
resting on top of the unit... right?

Whenever *anything* is on top of my VK-7 for, say, longer than a set, the
internal temperature of the unit rises and I risk a method actor's version
of 'Good night, Irene'.
