No, this happens when the top of the board is clear. If anything mine seems to get more stable as it warms up. Right after I power it on cold, all I have to do is gently tap the top of the case just behind the reverb/volume control (underneath which is the power transformer and board - I've had a look) and the display flickers and the unit resets.

Even when it's warmed up and there's nothing resting on the top of the case, the vibrations of just playing the thing can set it off. (This is, I think why other users have said it always seems to happen during solos - that's true in my experience and it's during solos when the keys take a real pounding and the vibrations are heavier).

As a first step toward identifying the problem as indeed an internal one,
nothing (such as another keyboard or notes, notebooks, music paper etc.) is
resting on top of the unit... right?

Whenever *anything* is on top of my VK-7 for, say, longer than a set, the
internal temperature of the unit rises and I risk a method actor's version
of 'Good night, Irene'.
