Subject:Re: New Member: Screaming XB-2 Help

Hi Alex,
Screaming Hammonds ( including Clones )come at a price. It's
generally the Leslie and its pre-amp/amp, that is the important
factor, or the Leslie Clone and it's pre-amp.
It doesn't have to be loud to scream, a clone/Leslie sim can scream
into a pair of headphones. The sound of a screaming Hammond and
Leslie was basically done by putting more gain onto the valves (
tubes ) than they were really designed to handle. In fact the tubes
would glow under the pressure.
The way to get this sound is a lot of what this group is about, but
it doesn't come cheaply, unfortunately. There are lots of earlier
posts on the subject. And there are a good number of ways to tackle
this.

For lowest cost you can use a used Leslie simulator, with in-built
distortion, such as the Korg G4, the Hughes and Kettner Tube
Rotosphere, or Dynacord DLS range for example. You could buy a tube
Leslie, which are becoming pretty expensive used, and of course heavy
to cart about. Motion-Sound products are not easily come by in the
UK., but they provide a lighter weight solution to the Leslie,
featuring moving treble horn, and sometimes moving bass rotor or
simulated bass rotation. To improve on the Leslie Clone idea, there
are new pre-amps available from the USA from group member Stephen
Hayes, available from www.speakeasy.com. which fatten up the sounds
by using a tube design which mimics, a Class A tube amp which can
also be leaned on,( but now not needing to glow ) as used in the old
Hammonds.

Finally, the screaming you mentioned on a track by Focus, I have been
informed was actually........ Thijs van Leer, singing to make that
screaming (I asked Jan

Regards from Thomas, with the Dynacord DLS300 Leslie sim. going spare.
