Subject:Re: OT: Speaking of Motion Sound
----------- GEEK ALERT -------------------
Motion Sound and the other company share the same IP address. This
is very common. Web servers often host multiple sites. They are
internally partitioned by something called a "Host Headers" that are
sent by web browers that are compliant with the HTTP 1.1 standard.
Normal practice is to set two host headers - one for "www.motion-
sound.com" and "motion-sound.com" to point to the desired web site.
However, they must have forgtten to set up the second one and thus
calls to "motion-sound.com" are given to the default site which must
be the other company. Just a note - when you register a domain
name, you only register "motion-sound.com". Any host identification
such as "www" or "ftp" are then defined but the registrant at his
DNS server. Contray to popular belief, there is NO standard that
says a web site must use "www" as the host name. It is simply a
common technique that has become a puesdo-standard.
