I've seen this kind of thing before. Although I've never heard a full explanation, I think this is a "legacy" issue with the web: When URLs were first being handed out, I think the www prefix was optional. Since everyone seemed to latch on to this method, people like Network Solutions started giving out your-url.com and www.your-url.com as pairs. However, that left a few early-adopters as exceptions to the rule.
