I tend to put the gear outdoors for a bit. Hanging clothes out in a light breeze seems to take smoke smell out of them, so I figured, why not try it on gear? It works for me. Obviously, this trick works better in warmer seasons/areas.

If your gear can tolerate it, one of those citrus-based cleaners will also work. I would lean toward the mildest one that I could find, like Orange Clean, which comes in a spray bottle. Obviously, try a little in a little-seen corner before subjecting your gear to the stuff, and be cautious on display covers and silkscreened areas, but I've found this particular brand to be fairly mild. Maybe just use this idea for the inside of cases, etc.

Another thing that I've noticed is that different items pick up more or less of the smell. The three worst culprits, in order of affinity for smoke, are 1) cables; 2) carpeted enclosures; and 3) SKB-style cases. What I'm driving at is that sometimes, just cleaning or replacing the cables can cure 90% of the problem.
