Subject:New Deep Purple DVDs.
Last night I viewed the new DVD "Classic Albums - Deep Purple Machine
Head". I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who plays or is interested
in rock Hammond. There are extensive interviews of Jon Lord at his B3
(yes, he is not playing a C3 in the studio). He shows many of his
techniques including much of the solos from Highway Star, Space
Trucking, and more. He also explains why he abandoned the Leslies for a
straight-in Marshall sound (unleashing the beast, he says).
There are wonderful moments when Roger Glover pulls out tracks from the
songs illustrating Blackmore and Lord's comping. There are also great
interviews with the other members of the Mark II band. Even Richie
Blackmore sounds lucid. There are also many cuts from a wonderful Deep
Purple concert circa. 1972 that I have not seen before. I would love to
see if this entire concert is on DVD or video somewhere. A great
addition to my library.
On the other hand, the new Deep Purple concert DVD, Perihelion, is
disappointing. I only had a quick scan through it last night, but except
for a few cuts, it is pretty much a step down from their last concert
DVD. The highlight of this DVD is their performance of "No No No" from
Fireball.
