My setup has a nice growl.

EMU B-3 to Colorsound Wah to ADA MP-1 tube preamp to solid state amp
or PA.

The MP-1 tubes starts overdriving when I switch on the Wah pedal.

Get yourself a nice tube preamp (tubeworks blue tube has a good
reputation, I like the ADA more), this works well together with the
internal overdrive of the CX. A wah (crybaby will do) makes this a
lot more controlable.
