I got your excellent explanation and ASCII graphics just fine in my email.
It's not Yahoo, it's the HTML spec, which says that "white space" (tabs,
line breaks, carriage returns and spaces) shall be treated the same and
grouped together as one space. So in order to represent a "hard" space,
there's a special notation - " " (non-breaking space).
