Hi,
I spent best part of three months trying every clone I could find. Decided on the electro coz the sounds were best ALSO - I loke to be able to update OS systems, ALSO Clavia say that they are releasing more piano sounds to be loaded via USB. Shurley this means some sort of flash ROM inside the machine so I can load one of my fav multisamples (strings, pad etc.) Whatch this space as they say....

I tried out lots of clones in the past two days...
I DIDN'T use my own headphones on any instrument. The CX3 and Electro were tested via an amplifier.

I own a VK7 and wasn't able to work my way around it!!!
The sounds didn't sound as good as my rig and I tried tweaking but didn't get too far.

Wow! A great instrument! It is very easy to use even withoud a LCD. I didn't have the time to see how the orchestral sounds were and don't remember if there was a knob for the keyclick. The keys are SMASHIN' (waterfall) and are a bit yellowish!!!
A great clone even though the sound improvement isn't that much to make me decide to trade in my tweaked VK7 to buy it...

I tried it once again my wasn't at all satisfied! Sorry guys but the sound is just to harsh for my taste. The bloke in the store tweaked it and it seemed to me as he knew the instrument... Just not my cuppa...

WOW!!! The sound is so damn warm! The bloke in the store said that too! And the price seemed more than reasonable
1750 Euros! The other Vintage sounds (El. Pianos and Clavinet) with a bit of tweaking sound great too! I own a Rhodes and a CP70 so I know what I'm talkin' about.

I tried this about 6-8 months ago and didn't like it at all!

With a vk7 as a controller it's great (can I use two keyboards? HOW?). My computer/soundcard though can't always buffer the notes (Celeron 533 with a Roland MPU401 (with MCA-1 connector box) / 16bit sound card direct which gives me a 25ms delay (which is quite good) and 64MB RAM) It has problems when the hard disk is working (not that often) which would be totally unacceptable in a recording session or on a gig!!! And I have NO intention in changing my computer for a sound simulator!)
So this is my ladder as regards clones:
1. Nord Electro (all round instrument, you just need another keyboard with strings, pads and synths and you've got all the sounds you need to gig in ANY place PLUS they also make a handy rack version now!)
2. VK8
3. VK7
4. B4 (it isn't practicle if you don't use a controller with drawbars)
5. VK77 (far too expensive)
5. CX-3
6. OB5 (forget this one made by Oberheim!)
I have yet to try the VOCE V3 / V5 and the EMU B3.
Is anyone in agrrement with me?
