I don't know about the VK8, but most new clones have tons of parameters hidden away. Changing things like: vintage or new wheels, leakage amount, distortion, amp type, EQ, etc. can make a huge difference. Since you are using a 147, make sure all the internal Leslie and amp simulators are turned off; if the Leslie sim is just 'stopped' it will still affect the sound a lot. And, even if the Leslie sim is off, you still might be playing through something like a Fender Twin Reverb sim. Backing off the Bass and maybe some of the Middle EQ could help the muddiness. Call the salesperson and get help doing all this stuff if you need to. Of course, even most M-3's probably don't sound much the same as each other anymore!

I am looking to replace my M3. I just got a VK-8 but I just can't
seem to get it to sound right. The sound is too full and gets muddy
no matter what I do. I am going through a Leslie 147. Is there too
much harmonic richness in the VK-8 samples? Is there a better
solution for me?
Here is what I did: I set up the vk-8 to sound as close as possible
to the M-3. I fiddled with the drawbars of the vk-8 until I got it to
sound exactly like the M-3 for individual notes (C major scale) No
vibrato/chorus/percussion/etc on either instrument.
However, when I play chords it loses it and no longer sounds good.
Example: If I play closed position C major chord on both manuals of
the M-3 I can hear every tone. Trying the same thing on the vk-8 gives
me mud even though when I play single notes it sounds exactly like
the M-3. It's not horrible mud, but just a general lack of definition
and I can't seem to fix it with drawbar manipulation. Please note
that I am comparing apples to apples here - the 6 notes played on the
M-3 are the same sounding notes played on the vk-8 - no octave shift
or anything. Play them individually and you can hardly tell the
difference, play the notes together and the M-3 sounds great, the Vk-
8 no.
Any ideas what is going on and any recommendations? I can still
return the Vk-8 until 4/29 so please let me know what you all think
ASAP. Thanks!!!
