Thanks to all who replied to my questions, both off and online. I now have a good understanding of the crescendo pedal -- I always understood the swell pedal. FWIW, the organ I played is about 105 years old, and has a crescendo pedal that affects the great, swell, and pedal manuals at the same time, always to the all-stops position.
