Good post. I've been on the Hamtech list for the last four years and it works fine. New hosts do a very good job at keeping the signal to noise ratio high, and don't hesitate to remove people from the list if they contribute a lot of off-topic posts or flames. Have to admit that the signal to noise ratio on your list is even better, though - a function of the high quality of the members and excellent moderators.

The Hamtech list is all E-mail, with no web access at all (which I prefer since web accessable lists are a major source for spammer address scanning). There is an Hamtech archive that is accesible only by list members. That site also has an FAQ section that is accessable, but there are no addresses on it.

I'm on another private pro audio list that is also only E-mail, but in this case there is no archive at all. It was removed when they confirmed that it was being scanned by spammers for addresses. Not a problem - people on the list save things they want to save to their own computer, and it works out great. Different people save different things, and organize the posts in any way they want.

If I were the wizard, I would go to a simple E-mail list without all the bells and whistles, including (without) the archive.
