The expression circuit in the V3 is not as smooth as on a real Hammond, and
almost 75% of it's effect seems to be in the first 25-30% of the travel
(the low side). It doesn't have the dynamic range that a real B-3
expression pedal has, either. It also varies a bit from unit to
unit: I've played good ones and bad ones. This might be why the feature
was dropped from the V5.
I used a Yamaha FC-7, through the MIDI volume jack on my controller
keyboard -- first a Roland D-50, and later a Yamaha AN1x. It worked the
same in both units. I tried the jack in the back of the V3, but couldn't
get any improvement, so I used the MIDI setup for convenience.
BTW, if you use the FC-7, you have to cut the plug off and swap the Tip and
Ring connections in order to work with the V3's jack or Roland gear.
