Subject:Re: Boston Smokin'.....Pitch-bend????
Another cool example of downward pitch bend occurs at the end of "Green
Eyed Lady" when the organ is sustaining a tritone chord and the pitch
dips down about a whole step and then glides back up. This can be
executed on a real Hammond by quickly switching the run switch off and
then back on again right afterwards. The pitch will drift down as the
tone wheels slow down but then corrects itself once full power is
restored. It will only work if done very quickly to avoid needing to use
the start switch again.
The clone version of this can be executed by "waggling" the pitch wheel
on a Hammond XB/XK or using the pedal-driven wheel brake feature on a new
CX3. I don't get the opportunity to play this song very often, but one
group I sit in with occasionally has this in their song list and I always
get a lot of grins when I do the pitch bend. It is a fun technique and
not often heard out of a Hammond.
