Subject:Re: OB-5
Hey everybody, I'm new on this list. I've read posts going back a few
weeks and I must say there's a lot of good information (not to mention
interesting philosophizing/ranting)going on here. And y'all do a
great job of staying on or near topic. So I'm glad to have found it.
I own a CX-3, a V5, and now a Nord Electro (which I got primarily for
the pianos). Got rid of my B3/122 a few years ago.
I ran across an OB-5 in a Portland music store some time ago and gave
it a good audition. I thought it sounded pretty good, but not as good
as the CX-3. Having two manuals is nice, but of course that means a
bulky item to transport, and when you can just rest a fatar controller
on top of a CX-3 and get the same deal, the advantages of a dual
manual beast are questionable, at least for many players.
I remember thinking that the construction didn't seem so great, The
controls were not as obvious as they could be, and the key action
lacked crispness. With all the excellent competition, I'm not
surprised if the OB-5 ship sank before it left the harbor.
By the way, I love organ side of my Nord Electro. I don't think it
does "traditional" B-3 nearly as well as the CX-3, so it can't replace
that in my rig, but you can get some wild and twisted sounds out of it
by playing with the effects (e.g.,
organ>ringmod>phaser>distortion>lesliesim).
