I purchased both the VK7 and the HK--both units sight unseen (and sound
unheard).

I can't stress enough the importance of you being able to get a hold of the
HK for a trial run before you shell-out the bones.

One idea: see if a local dealer is willing to let you bring in your VK into,
say, a lesson room, to try out the HK (through both head phones and
speakers). Of course, it would be great if you could borrow the HK and try
it in a typical playing situation.

I know that we are touching on a subjective issue here, but all I can tell
you is that I was disappointed with my HK and returned it. Now, there is
always the possibility that my particular piece was defective in some way
and in that case, I'm not a reliable source.
