Subject:RE: Lord's Hush?

Loved the discussion about Lord's Receipe, Made In Japan. My
favourite Deep Purple song is Hush. I just love the percolating
rhythms. Anyone want to share some secrets about this song?

I always find that a couple of beers helps! You have to approach this
song with a little bit of abandon.

But seriously - I like to quote the opening 9 or 10 bars because they
are such a signature part of the tune. Then I go off and do my own
thing for a time, then when it's about time to bring it back, I quote
the ascending chopping riffs part up to the end. Two manuals with the
same drawbars pulled make this technique a lot easier. I typically
use something pretty full like 888666888 and C3. This song does NOT
require the heavy distortion that he utilizes on later tunes. Notice
that he doesn't go to fast speed until the climax at the end.

Although it isn't really authentic Jon, I also like to have the lower
manual set up for the early part of the solo at 008000000 for those
Keith Emersonish "wow" smears to punctuate what's going on in the
solo.

Think percussive. Try some conga finger slaps in there in the middle.
