You can always use an AC-powered merger. My point was that line-powering
is not in the MIDI spec, so any manufacturers' comments about "designing it
properly" are misleading. In fact, if you use the sample circuit shown in
the v1.0 spec, you CAN'T line-power a device; all of the available current
is needed for the MIDI receiver. In most cases, line-powering works, but
there are no absolute guarantees.
