Amanda,
It's perfectly o.k. to want someone to teach you. You can only learn from
people better than yourself. Not all great musicians are self-taught, and
not all self-taught musicians are great (I'm the perfect example of the
latter). I wouldn't rely on your teacher completely, though, and I would be
very clear with him/her about what it is you want to learn to do. The
advice from some of the previous posts can be very helpful in that regard.
Don't hate me everyone else, but it is always best to know what the chords
and scales are that you are playing. How else do you communicate with a
band? Theory is important, not just mimicking others.
Also, I didn't realize all Hammond players were supposed to move to the DC
area. I feel isolated down here in Atlanta :)
Guess I'll just stay home and play some sad ballads.
Best of luck Amanda, and have fun in DC everyone!
