Subject:Tweaking the XK-2
I've had an XK-2 for about a year now, and while I've never expected (and
never will expect) it to sound just like a B-3, I'm wondering if there are
some things I should be doing to get a meatier, ballsier sound out of it. It
just doesn't have the muscle of my trusty console and I'm hoping it can be
beefed up -- somehow! I'm running it through a Pro-3T and a Roland KC-500. I
know, the Roland isn't the greatest amp in the world, and maybe that's part
of my problem. Anyway, I've tried doing some EQ on it, to roll off the highs
and reduce the shrillness. On the other end, it puts out plenty of bass. I've
played with key click and overdrive. And yet...and yet....it still isn't fat
in the middle, compared to the B-3. Something's missing. Yeah I know:
tonewheels! But seriously, is it the Roland? I gotta believe it's more than
that, because so much of the sound isn't even coming from the Roland. Is it
the Pro-3T? I'd greatly prefer to find a *portable* soultion to this issue,
and not get a big box of a Leslie (for one thing I already have a 122 that
stays home with the B). But bottom line, I'd love for this thing to have
more balls. Suggestions?
