Subject:Re: Emu B3 sound quality...
-Hi Matt and Bruce,
Further to my review on the E-mu B-3 I really feel that I need to
amend a few things and would like to do a short reprise to update
some of my comments if that would be possible.
Briefly though, I was labouring under a misconception as to how the
Leslie speed on the multi-samples was kept in sync. As far as I know
know, time -stetching is not the device used, but instead multi-
samples are zoned and within their zones the timing of the Leslie
speed is slightly out from one note to another, rather like playing
several Leslies together, each slightly different in speed.
The result is much the same though. The effect is really astonishing.
The module present the Classic Hammond and Leslie Sound like no other
module because it is sampled through miking a real Leslie.
The strangeness of sound I mentioned in the review, very slight, in
any case, is due in the main to note stealing because of lack of
polyphony when comprehensive drawbar settings are built up when
editing presets.
I now have two modules which pretty much deals with this. I use one
module for upper manual on midi channel one, plus an additional
preset on midi channel four, to build up the higher harmonics. The
other module I use for lower manual on midi channel two plus an
additional active midi channel four for more upper manual higher
harmonics to mix with the first module. Finally there's enough
polyphony left over to use midi channel three for pedals.
I'm in Clone Heaven. This B-3 set-up has the power to produce the
back of the neck tingle like the real deal.
I have now sold my precious Rotosphere as being surplus to
requirements.
I have just bought an Xm1 (used) which I intend to work in parallel
with the
two B-3's to add a little on the fly drawbar control to the above
arrangement, plus use for vib/chorus settings sans Leslie, which
the E-mu is not really designed to do. I'll report back when it's
all up and running and play a
little demo to illustrate.
Regards for now, Thomas.
