Hi Larry:
An excellent post! I agree with almost everything you've said.
But, when I said "outlandish", and yes, I said it, it was only partially a
reaction to the:
> > No human can tell a NI B4 recording from a...snip
Then I gave it some thought... based on a "real-word" situation. If I'm
listening to a recording, through generic loudspeakers, in a more than
likely non-studio environment, yeah..anybody would be hard pressed to tell
the difference. (This would be the "all things being equal part")
UNLESS....
we have spent a good amount of time, (Years, maybe?) playing and learning to
discern the very minute differences between the two. A Yamaha grand piano
sounds completely different than a Yamaha upright grand. Is it not true that
some people might be able to hear the, maybe, subtle difference? Not a great
analogy perhaps, but applicable.
I have heard my Roland drum machine samples used on TV/records/film
scores/etc. and I can instantly identify them. Even single hits! Am I
blessed...NO..I've just lived and listened to them for so long, I know 'em.
I can't forget 'em! (Wish I could!)
>When a old Hammond shows up with these ailments it is said to "add
>character"
I cannot agree more. Since no two Hammonds sound alike to start with, you
have to wonder where the notion of "ideal" came from. It's a crock to be
sure.
>if I were part of a 2guitar horn band, I wouldn't even *think* of playing
>the real thing.
Neither would I. I play progressive and R&B. If I could, I'd never be
without the 'big box'. The reality is, it just ain't practical...that's why
we adore the clones.
>Interestingly, the B and C's have spring-steel return springs on the keys
>while...
For my style of playing, nothing beats the 'waterfall' keys. I used to break
the keys, my hands and my heart every time I confronted synth/diving board
manuals. On this topic, like my head, I'm stubborn.
Last, I too read a post, (maybe in the archives?), about that guy with 14
Leslies in a skating rink. Is this even possible? Know any details about
this? Pretty "Heavy Metal" if true.
Thanks again for a thought provoking discussion
Mark P.
