Subject:Further Leslie musings ...

All,

I'm actually surprised -- even disappointed -- at how close the sound of
the CX-3's Leslie simulator is to a mic'ed Leslie. I still think the
Leslie sounds warmer, and has better midrange definition -- as seen when
more drawbars are pulled in -- but I wonder how much of that can be
attributed to the use of tubes vs. the CX-3's overdrive simulation. I also
suspect that a 5-band or a graphic-EQ could be used to get even closer in
sound than the 3-band EQ on my Mackie mixer was capable of. Hmm ... maybe
I'll play around with the ART Dual MP and my stereo EQ sometime, and see
what I can get.

There's still no doubt that the ON-STAGE effect of a Leslie is better than
any sound that could be obtained through a monitor, even if it's sending
out a perfect clone of the mic'ed Leslie sound -- the 3-D effect can't be
duplicated by two speakers, no matter how well placed. Nevertheless, it's
interesting to hear the comparison of what the AUDIENCE gets in the two
cases, especially in a large venue, which isn't all that different.
