In the last six years I've owned three Barbettas, two of which I still have.
The first one quit working after 2 years, but the repair turned out to be
simple and I continued to play through it another year before I sold it.
The second one I bought I've never had any trouble with, but the third one
has been fixed twice, the last time being over a year ago and so far it's
working fine. I'm a Moderator for Kurzlist, a Kurzweil User Group also on
YahooGroups, and from time to time we have this same discussion about which
is the best keyboard amp, etc. Generally everybody raves about the sound of
the Barbettas, but the question of their reliability always comes up and
from the anecdotal information I've seen from quite a few owners, Barbettas
just don't have a very consistent track record. I do think if you're
careful with them though they tend to hold up better (Duh!). I don't think
it's a coincidence that my Barbetta I've never had any trouble with travels
in a customized Anvil case. I don't think they're badly built or even badly
designed, they just don't take abuse as well as other amps. Conversely, my
JBL's and Mackies get tossed all over the place and they're indestructible.
I'm quite happy with my Barbettas and I don't see myself ever getting rid of
them; I've just learned that you have to be gentle with them if you don't
want them in the shop all time. Before I climb off my soapbox, my opinion
is that for best sound I recommend the Barbetta over the JBL or Mackie, and
I further recommend that you take good care of it if you get one.
