All,
Over time, some members have needed to change their email addresses, and
this often creates a problem for them. I thought I'd take a minute to
explain what happens, to save everyone frustration and additional emails.
When you joined the CWSG, I asked you to send me an email telling me that
you have read and understand the charter -- i.e., the rules of the
group. Once you do that, I change your settings so that you can post
messages. This sometimes annoying rule is meant to prevent spammers from
joining the group and sending unwanted advertisements. It happens more
often that one might think on mailing lists. Simply by joining this list,
all members indirectly "announce" to the world that they are musicians
and/or aficionados of the Hammond sound. Spammers love finding such
ready-made targets!
When you leave the CWSG and return later under the SAME name, everything is
transparent. It's just like you never left, and all your settings stay in
place. The same is true when you edit your Yahoo profile to change your
email address: everything stays put.
When you leave the group and re-subscribe under a new email name, however,
Yahoo considers you a new member, and locks you out of sending
messages. There's simply no way for Yahoo to recognize that you are
actually the same person as former member john_doe@abc.com. If you send me
(bruce@ashbysolutions.com) a short message stating that you changed email
hosts, I'll turn your settings on under the new name. The same thing is
true if you subscribe under a second email address for work; let me know
the address, and I'll enable it. (Since the message posting is limited to
group members -- another Spam prevention measure -- emails cannot be sent
from non-group addresses.)
When the group was 50-60 members, I often recognized changes by looking at
the new email addresses, and made the changes on my own. Now that we're
over 200 members, I can't keep track of all of the names, so I need your
proactive efforts.
Regards,
-BW
