Agree. You can do a lot with presets but you can't do everything.
They are by their very nature pre-set, so grabbing a handful of
drawbars and seeing what happens isn't really an option.

I use a sort of similar approach on the VK-7 but it is easy to get
confused with only 1 set of DBs and I've never really hit on a
comfortable situation.

In my setup, panel presets 1-8 all have the same upper setting, but
the lower setting is different in each one and the type of setting is
included in the name. Pedal pretty much doesn't vary. I then use
the panel DBs to set the upper tone using the "Manual" button when I
want to change.

If I then want to adjust the lower and pedal, I've got a PC-1600x
which I've programmed with the sys-ex strings for the sliders,
although it is difficult to get the combinations right without the
display so I haven't really used this much on gigs. I find for jazz
though I don't really change the registration a huge amount, although
I do like the 1' or percussion swapover for comping/lead work.

As most will be painfully aware from previous clone experience, one
set of drawbars and some dimly lit buttons to switch settings really
limits creativity!! I don't think humans work well with modal
interfaces (remember learning the vi editor in Unix!!), and this
helps reinforce my view...

Anyone got any other tips for use of 'impoverished' single drawbar
set clones ?
