Subject:Howard- CX-3/145 vs B3(chop)/122
Howard,
My name is Tony. . . . I've been playing hammonds
"out" since I was 15. . .(M3/145) then C3/122
later. I gig "alot" and have a B3/122 in my basement
and gig out with a variety of rigs (due to "venue" and
I use the word loosly) "sizes".....My main rig right
now is a CX-3(nu) and 145 with a "new" 147/amp from
Goff and a new Speakeasy 147 type tube preamp.....I'm
47...(not 147-ha!)
The verdict, If you can gig out with a good chop...
FN DO IT! (I know the space issue IS a problem)
Even though the CX-3 is the best cloan out
there.....
IT's still "schrill" sounding and thin with less
"density" to the body of the tone than the real thing.
. .Not to mention the chorus(electro mech.) in the
real thing and the overdrive and overall "bandwith"
AND the Perc. . . . .the real thing will sit in the
mix like a nice fat jollywagger! And cut when you want
to cut through (band volumn?!@#$%-fn guitars!)
The CX-3 ain't bad though man.......I'm thinking
about a chop myself but the sensibilities of the
players here on LI is "small" . . . .like "hit and
run"
the same way I bet it is in alot of places. . . . but
there not keyboard players are they! Seems to me
poeple are playing the real thing more and I'm dying
to jump in. Alot of the rooms I play
are small.......But in my heyday. . . there was "NO"
other option but the real thing or an L series, M3, or
Porta B. . . .those were your garden variety axes man!
The stages were bigger than, bigger rooms - Rock
Clubs!
If you can swing it and haul it and maintain it(no
small task) go for the REAL thing! You Won't be sorry
it can B the experience of a life time to play and gig
with one for any extended amout of time! I gig with
the CX-3 and I like it but I ALWAYS and I mean every
second know what I am missing. . . .Buying and gigging
with a B3 is like deciding weather or not to have a
dog. . . .you gotta know your gonna "walk him every
morning and evening! oil him 2! But he will always
bring back the bone!
Tony
