Richard,
That "roll" is most often called a "palm gliss" -- probably because
players often use their palms to create the sound. Here's what I think
are the important factors:
1. You need to grab both black and white keys to get the full effect.
White keys only do not do the trick.
2. Foldback is an important part of the sound, since most of the tone
comes from 80-200Hz. If your keyboard sends the 16' drawbar all
the way to the low C, it sounds different -- not bad, just
DIFFERENT.
3. Simpler drawbar settings work better. Most rock B-3 players set
the lower manual to 888000000 or 848400000 for smooth glisses.
4. And, sad to say: It sounds better through a real Leslie. Even a
B-3 through a tone cabinet or a guitar amp is missing something
in the gliss dept.
Best regards,
-BW

Subject: [Voce] The Crush
Hi Group,
I am considering purchasing a V5 because my Roland XP / JV sounds just
dont seem to melt together on the roll, even through my Motion Sound Pro
3T and Low Pro. There are a lot of neat B3 type patches in my rig that
are super for basic chords and leads. The problem occurs when you want
to get wild and roll the keys or play the keys like a bongo and get
that distorted jam happening. Very disheartening.
So, this is a question for all B3 / Voce gurus out there. What is the
best combination of sonic factors (instrumentationsoundwise to produce
that blended-note smooth roll (distorted or not)? Examples of what I am
talking about - -
Three Dog Night "Easy To Be Hard" - that big roll leading into "Do you
only care . . ."
and of course "Whiter Shade Of Pale" you know the part ". . . And so it
was - -"
Please help me out guys, I don't think I have it in me to haul a B3 to
40 gigs a year.
Thanks,
Richard Schulte
