Having owned all three, I can offer my opinion on this one. When the
original 1/2 rack Spin came out, it was about the most sophisticated
sim available (although a lot of people really liked the Dynacord CLS
222). Nowdays both the Roto and the G4 are much more realistic than
a Spin; but neither have MIDI control, which is important to some.
The Roto is real clean, which makes it good for recording, but to me
the rotary effect is not pronounced enough (it just lacks balls). I
still maintain that H&K designed this more for guitar players than
keyboards. I really like the G4; the rotary effect is, to my ears,
quite realistic and when I warm up the the preamp with a Real Tube
II, the distortion stage is much improved. It's very flexible. I
wish it was rackmountable. For the under $300 range, I don't think
you can beat a G4.
BTW, 2 days ago I finally acquired a Motion Sound R3-147 and IT KICKS
ASS!! (oh, sorry) Strictly an in-line unit, it can run through your
effects loop just like the simulators above, but it's got a real
rotating horn *already miked*. For me, it's the best of both worlds,
short of hiring a roadie to haul around my Leslie 145.
