What a great reply, very interesting, thanks.
I have retired from work, and the keyboard is my hobby. I am
shoe-horned into a small bedroom, which is converted into a music
studio. I have two Tecnics keyboards which apart from the myriad of
other accoustic instrument sounds these keyboards have available, can
be coaxed into Klaus Wunderlich and other European Hammond
sound-alike
Hammond voicings. The keyboards are midi'd to a Hammond XM1 module
which currently I play through a Hughes and Kettner Tube Rotosphere.
As very often I am forced to use headphones, so as not to disturb the
family, variously engaged on other matters, I also feed the total
output of keyboards and Hammond module to a Sennheiser Lucas
Pro-Logic
Headphone processor which very cleverly simulates the effect of
listening to loudspeakers spread round a virtual room, that is you
appear to hear the resultant sound outside your head rather than
between your ears.
I mention this because at present I am unable to accomodate a full
size Leslie.
I have found that by tweaking the sound of the output of the
Rotosphere by routing the output thru EQ and altering the left-hand
and right-hand frequency responses differently, that is by
emphasising
some frequencies independently and then feeding the result through a
mixer where left and right channels are partially cross-mixed I am
now
getting a very good sound, which as an added bonus can be recorded
straight to tape. The partial cross-mix makes a major difference to
the depth of tremulant and the sound is very musical in ways that so
far I have not heard from digital simulators.
Yours views on the Spin2 seem to suggest that I am better off with my
present set-up.
I envy US Hammond nuts who have, it seems, unlimited supplies of B3's
and Leslies and huge spaces to install them.
The Voce egroup is very interesting as it seems that others are also
trying to emulate the sound either without the grief of major lifting
or because they too haven't the necessary space to accomodate the
'beast'.
The little 'OLO' Leslie, ( Old Lady Organ ) seems like a way to go.
What do others think. I know there are many organists who are used to
playing live and couldn't live with simulation but I would be happy
with a perfect simulation of the sound I hear on CD, without the rush
of wind noise that is heard up close. The Hughes and Kettner is there
politely simulating a factory new Leslie, but Leslies can be mic'd so
many ways and I would like to up the AM a little to enhance the throb.
