Mel et al,
I used to use a PC1600 with my V3, and it will most certainly "do the
job." It has more capabilities than the MIDI DB Module, including the
ability to send a SysEx string when a switch or slider is pressed/moved.
It will not, however feel like a Hammond organ. It's also a little
cumbersome to program, IMHO.
What I liked:
- 49 (?) setups allowed one set per V3 patch, if you need such
flexibility;
- The SysEx programming allowed for sending patch commands to both
manuals, so I could setup dual-manual patches -- i.e., things
like 888400038 on top and 876522000 on bottom, all with a single
button push;
- It had lots of buttons, thus allowing for Leslie control, sustain
control, etc. in addition to the standard percussion and vibrato;
- Buttons could be made momentary or push/push;
- It connects up directly to Cakewalk 8.0 and above, for mixer duty.
What I didn't like:
- The programming interface was not intuitive -- at least, not until
I used it for a few weeks;
- The sliders were slightly stiff, like mixer sliders, while drawbars
are smooth. It was not possible to grab a "handful of sliders in
the same way that I could grab "a handful of drawbars."
- The sliders worked opposite to the way drawbars worked, and had to
be programmed "backwards"; i.e., from 127 to 0.
- It costs a lot more.
I eventually sold the PC-1600 and bought my two sets of DB's.
Best regards,
-BW

Dear List,
Great idea Bruce! As a V5 owner, I would without hesitation buy a set
of
drawbars if DR MUSIC had them for sale (and will write to tell them
this).
To other V5 owners thinking about options: the best I could come up
with as
a substitute for a drawbar module is the Peavey 1600X which has 16
assignable
midi sliders and 16 assignable midi buttons (18 sliders would be even
nicer!). That runs for nearly $400 (at the store where I saw one). I
haven't seen the manual for the Peavey 1600X so please don't take my
word
that it will "do the job." However, it looks like it should.
Mel
