I agree with all of Pete's suggestions about getting the levels right on
your stereo. If using the CD/Aux inputs is not a possibility in your
situation, Radio Shack (still?) makes an attenuator cable that drops line
levels down to microphone levels.

As to the RPM-1, I used one for about a year, and it benefits from some
high-end rolloff. It's been a while, but I think I put the EQ after the
RPM, rather than before. Try it both ways. I used a -12dB/octave rolloff
at 5.5KHz, a narrow 2-3dB peak at 3kHz. Be aware that it's possible to
overdrive the solid-state portion of the RPM's input stage and not hit the
overdrive on the 12AX7 tube; this could also account for some of the
harshness you are hearing. As I recall, the Input Level control should be
1-2 "clock positions" less than the Drive control for the best sound.
