Subject:Re: V-5 Percussion
Bill,
Unfortunately, V5 support from Dave Amels is probably not to be
expected. Voce, Inc. closed its doors more than a year ago, and Amels
and Alonso Electronic Design sold the V5 manufacturing rights to DR
Music. What the initial written and unwritten arrangements around the
V5 were are anybody's guess, but from an outsider's perspective, it
looks like Dave is very busy with his software projects, and has bowed
out of the V5 effort to a great extent, perhaps fully. Don't hold your
breath waiting for a personal response from him: When Voce went under,
I inquired about becoming a V3 repair and modification center, and
offered to pay for the schematics and service data; I never received a
reply, despite several attempts on my part.
If you or anyone else on the list can get hold of a set of schematics
for the V5, I'm sure I can figure out the value change necessary. The
design is similar to the V3, so I'm sure I can figure out what's going
on. Unfortunately, as a V3 owner, I have very little leverage to obtain
a V5 schematic; perhaps an owner would have more push.
Two things to consider in all this mess:
- Proper modification of a V3, by a user or electronics technician, was
considered to be non-voiding to the warranty -- by Voce, Inc., that
is.
This was a VERY unusual policy in the music business. (As an example,
merely TAKING THE COVER OFF of my DOD distortion pedal voids the
warranty, as explicitly stated on the label on the bottom of the
pedal.
Whether DR Music feels that boosting of the percussion circuit is
"warranty-approved" or not might deter somebody from making the
change.
- I have never taken the top off a V5 and looked at the insides, but
Dave
and Co. managed to cram most of the circuitry of a MIDI Drawbar
Module,
plus half the insides of a V3, into what is essentially the DB
module's
case when they created the V5. This most likely means that many more
surface-mount components were used, and maybe some special integrated
circuit devices, too. Adding a second resistor in parallel with the
original percussion resistor on the V3 was a piece of cake for anybody
that could even MARGINALLY solder a PC board -- you didn't even have
to
remove the board from the case. If the new resistor is a
surface-mount
device, it could be a lot trickier to make the change.
Best regards,
-BW

Greetings Everyone-
Does anyone know what needs to be done for the percussion mod on the
V-5. I
bought it thru BT Productions and He's been waiting to hear back from
Dave
Amels.(at this stage it's been months) I've tried emailing Dave and
D.R.-no
response from either...nice support! Any input would be great.
Thanks-
Bill
