Subject:RE: V3's
There are basically two different "generations" of V3:
a.. The older version had a standard (Amphenol) 6-pin Leslie 122 connector
on the back.
a.. The later version had DIN-6 'R/S' connector on the back, which
contains all of the necessary signals to create a Leslie interface, but not
necessarily at "Leslie-level".
If you're not using the V3 to drive a Leslie, there is no difference that
you will notice -- assuming that the FIRMWARE is up to date. For R/S-style
V3's, the latest firmware is v3.4; it may be a different number for the
older style. Upgrading may be difficult, now that the V3 is out of
production, although CAE Sound in California might be able to do the
upgrade.
Having said all that, V3's DO vary a bit from unit-to-unit, especially in
two areas: the amount of percussion volume, and the amount of "travel" in
the expression circuit.
Even after the percussion mod shown on the web, some owners complain that
the percussion isn't "loud enough." Even taking into consideration the
subjective aspects of such comments, I'm inclined to believe that some V3's
have more percussion "kick" than others.
Back in 1998, Dave Amels told me that Voce was noticing a lot of variation
in the expression circuit, due to variances in the photocells and diodes
used. I know that my last-generation V3 had disappointing
headroom/travel/dynamic range when I got it, but after the expression
circuit died and I sent the unit back under warranty, it came back with a
good deal more range, and I've used and enjoyed it that way ever since.
Others on the list still complain about the expression circuit, so it seems
to be a widespread problem.
My best advice would be to listen to the unit you plan to buy, with those
two items in mind. If you are buying the V3 sight-unseen, ask the present
owner about his/her subjective impressions of those areas, and try to get an
agreement to have 24 hours to reject the unit on delivery, based on those
criteria.
Best regards,
-BW

I know that with some products one part of the line is better or improved
over others even though they look just alike. Are any of the V-3's to be
avoided or desired and can they be identified by serial numbers or model
number or something along those lines???
Thanks,
JT
