Randall,
There are probably several pieces out there that will give you the Leslie effect without the pain.
Try the Hughes and Kettner Rotosphere. It's pretty good. It's a bit short on flexibilty, meaning you can't adjust the stereo pan or the speed of the rotor simulation. Otherwise very good. I listened to one at the local Guitar Center and was impressed with it other than the above issues.
Also, I heard that one of the guitar guys there had a conversation with a H & K rep and told him about the obvious shortcomings and the rep seemed genuinely interested to know his thoughts. They may be coming out with a new model soon so look for one of them. Or just demo one. You may like it the way it is. Price was about 249.00 I believe. Korg made a G4 pedal. (check me on the model no.) I own an old Dynacord CLS 222 which is pretty darn good and has a bunch of adjustments. They're no longer in production.
OR tell your guitar guy to clam up. What do they know?
I played an XB3 and the C model today. They sound ok but boy they sure have a terrible phase problem. HS can't figure it out.
If you can get one of those things for less than the GNP it might be nice to have. The one I played was very flimsy and really had a bunch of junk on it I wouldn't want.
